A six-year-old girl is in hospital after being struck and dragged by a car Tuesday morning as part of a larger chain of events which ended with the car colliding with a house.

It all happened around 9 a.m. on a stretch of Mercer Road.

According to Waterloo Regional Police, the car was leaving a private parking lot when it first struck a northbound van.

“The car continued, and struck a six-year-old girl who was standing on the sidewalk,” said police spokesperson Olaf Heinzel.

“Ultimately, the vehicle stopped after striking a house.”

Seeing the child become pinned underneath the car, Rennie O’Neill was one of the first people to run to the scene.

“A few people went over, took the child by the arm and pulled the child out,” he told CTV News.

The girl was then laid on the ground and covered with a coat for warmth.

While that was going on, O’Neill went around to the driver’s side of the car and helped the driver out of the vehicle.

“She was crying, she was panicked and she was upset,” he said.

The girl was taken by paramedics to Region of Waterloo International Airport, where a waiting air ambulance took her to Hamilton.

She was said to have serious injuries, but further details on her condition were not available.

The 33-year-old driver has since been charged with careless driving.
