Shoplifting is never a good idea, but one man in Brantford definitely picked the wrong time and the wrong place to try his hand at it.

Around 12:15 p.m. Monday, Brantford Police say, a man was seen leaving a supermarket on Colborne Street West without attempting to pay for the items in his bag.

A store security guard started chasing the man in the store’s parking lot.

That’s when a bystander intervened – an off-duty Toronto Police officer – followed by another bystander, who happened to be a retired Brantford Police officer.

The retired officer used his truck to get ahead of the suspected shoplifter, who was brought under control by the trio.

A 25-year-old Brantford man is now charged with theft, possession of stolen property and resisting arrest.
