Property currently belonging to Waterloo Collegiate Institute and Wilfrid Laurier University could be turned into a massive community hub, city councillors heard Monday.

Councillors were shown a proposal for an $80-million development of the 22-acre Hazel Street lands.

Under the proposal, the WCI high school would be rebuilt as a three- or four-storey facility, with no gymnasium or space for music and arts classes.

Those classes would instead take place in a pair of other facilities built on the property – a 40,000-square-foot performing arts venue and a 33,000-square-foot building featuring 20,000 square feet of gym space.

Retail units could also be carved out in those buildings, as well as in a proposed 500-space parking garage.

While Laurier, the city and the Waterloo Region District School Board have agreed to work together to pursue redevelopment of the site, no money has been set aside for construction.
