Forty-four cows have been killed after a fire Saturday night in Maryhill.

Dozens of fire trucks and firefighters were on scene of a massive fire at a dairy farm on Maryhill Road.

Four stations responded to the blaze including Maryhill, Breslau, Conestogo and St. Jacobs.

Flames could be seen from kilometres away.

A friend told CTV Kitchener the owners were not home when it started, and returned to find the property up in flames.

“There was 45 head of milking cattle that were in the barn, there was two hundred in another barn that was beside but we were able to protect that from any fire,” said Kevin Karley, District Fire Chief for Maryhill.

The cause is still unclear however, the owner’s friend says the fire could be linked to the power outages caused by the recent ice storm.
