Motorists driving Highway 401 – and plenty of people in Cambridge and Kitchener – may have been surprised Wednesday afternoon by smoke billowing from the northwest corner of Cambridge.

Although the smoke was visible for a great distance, it was part of a Cambridge Fire Department training exercise.

A small structure on the Riverbank Drive property was intentionally set aflame to give firefighters a chance to practice their skills.

Multiple people told CTV News they were able to see smoke from the exercise from as far as Guelph Line.

The facility is also used by Woolwich Township and Puslinch Township firefighters for training.
