A new radiation unit will allow about 400 more patients to be treated with radiation every year at the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre.

Construction on the unit, which will be the facility’s fifth, officially started Friday.

Health Minister Eric Hoskins was on-hand for the kickoff.

He said that the new unit would reduce wait times for cancer treatment in Waterloo Region and help local patients access “high-quality” care in their own community.

The province is spending $5.42 million to create the radiation unit and install the centre’s second CT simulator – a computer which determines the best amount of radiation to give a patient.

In this year’s budget, the province pledged to spend a total of $130 million on cancer care over the next three years.
