A portion of ICON’s south tower has been given the green light for occupancy by city inspectors.

The first floor, common corridor and floors 2 through 24 have been approved for occupancy by our building inspectors.

But there is an exception; any odd-numbered suites on each floor that end in ‘05’ like 205, 305 and above are not move-in ready, and officials with the city say the entire 25th floor remains off limits.

The Acting Director of Communications for the city of Waterloo, Janice Works, says, “Our building inspectors continue to work with the developer by making themselves available as needed for safety and general occupancy inspections.”

On Friday afternoon, the city issued an occupancy permit for the north tower.

Meanwhile, Waterloo Region Community Legal Services has had many students knocking on its door asking for help.

Shannon Down who is a lawyer with the legal clinic says right now the best advice she has for students is to ask for a lawyers help.

"A lot of these students, if they're 18 or 19, it may be the first be the first time they've ever been a tenant," says Down.

Adding, "If things change, if the landlord's/student's expectations aren’t met they would be bound by that agreement and think hard before signing a document that limited your compensation."

While Icon representatives have directed some tenants to hotels until their units are ready, some students were told Friday morning that the only remaining hotel options are in Cambridge and Guelph.
