After nearly two years at Queen’s Park, Brant MPP Dave Levac says he’s about ready to call it a career.

Levac, 63, announced Friday that he will not run in the next election, bringing an end to a career in politics that began in 1999.

Since 2011, he has served as the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.

In a statement, Levac thanked his family, staff members in Brantford and Toronto, political supporters and constituents.

“I have always believed that your trust in me since 1999 was a reflection of the very kind of community you wanted,” he said.

In announcing his retirement, Levac said it would be “unfortunate and wrong” for anyone to think his decision was based on Ontario’s current political climate.

“Simply put, between my career as an educator and provincial politics, I will be in my 45th year of public service in 2018,” he said.

Prior to entering politics, Levac was a teacher and principal with the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board.
