Imagine Adoption’s board of directors had no reason to suspect anything was amiss with the adoption agency’s pocketbook, a former director testified Monday.

Christopher Hughes told the court that he only learned of the non-profit’s financial issues after he left the organization.

Rick and Susan Hayhow, formerly Imagine’s general manager and executive director respectively, are on trial for fraud charges.

They’re accused of paying for home renovations, a horse and other personal items with $420,000 of Imagine’s funds.

The agency went bankrupt in 2009 – weeks after Hughes testified he first heard concerns about its finances from an accountant – leaving a number of families stranded in the middle of the adoption process.

In court Monday, Hughes said board members were not actively involved in financial discussions, but were regularly told the agency’s books were in good shape.

Dealing most directly with the finances, he said, was Rick Hayhow.

The trial resumes Tuesday with more testimony from Hughes.
