A new 3-D printing lab at the University of Waterloo is getting its funding from the federal government.

3-D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, produces less waste than traditional manufacturing methods.

From up in the sky to down in the ground the possibilities of 3-D printing seem endless; the technology can be used in automotive, mining and even aerospace.

Waterloo M-P Bardish Chagger was on hand to announce the $8.9 million dollars in funding.

The funding comes on the heels of two other projects made possible in part through the federal and provincial governments. A $32.6-million federal funding announcement was made in January of 2017 for the new Engineering 7 building at the university, as well as a $17-million supercomputer, the largest at any Canadian university, which was funded through the provincial government and the Canada Foundation for Innovation.
