A group representing Canada’s mink breeders is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to a conviction in the case of 500 mink set loose at a Brant County farm.

The Canada Mink Breeders Association announced its offer Tuesday, about half a week after the mink were released.

“We are shocked that any person or group would commit such a cruel and irresponsible act,” CMBA president Marianna Patten said in a news release.

Many of the released mink are believed to be kits which have been alive for less than two weeks, all of whom are expected to die without having their mothers present to provide them with food and warmth.

A group calling itself the Willow Pond Mink Freedom Movement has claimed responsibility for freeing the mink.

The Scotland-area farm hit last week is the fourth affected by a mink release in southern Ontario since last spring.
