On Good Friday, Charlie and Dorothy Parr took their usual walk through Guelph’s Riverside Park.

As they approached the tree planted in memory of their granddaughter Heather, they realized that something was wrong.

“We noticed that the plaque was missing off Heather’s tree,” says Charlie.

It wasn’t long before they realized that somebody had forcibly removed the plaque from its base – no easy feat given they were glued together.

“We were both really upset that somebody would touch it, rip it apart like that,” says Dorothy.

Heather was killed in 2012, in an ATV crash.

The 20-year-old had just started working at a family renovations business.

Her plaque – which was installed thanks to money raised by family and friends – was one of six to be ripped off their bases during a vandalism spree.

“Anybody that would do that is pretty low,” says Charlie.

One of the six has since been found, and it’s possible the other five were simply thrown into the river and will be found as water levels drop.

If not, the Parrs will have to find the money for a replacement plaque on their own.
