Work is pausing on demolition at the site of the former Mayfair Hotel this week, as crews move in to shore up a third building.

The Mayfair itself has already been demolished after engineers raised concerns that it – as well as the former Hymmen Hardware building abutting the Mayfair and facing King Street – was structurally unsafe.

Demolition of the Hymmen building was expected to start this week, but has been postponed due to concerns about a third building – 150 King Street West.

That building is not slated for demolition, but engineers are concerned about the impact Hymmen’s demolition could have on it.

As a result, the wall between those two buildings is being shored up.

Steel beams are also being brought in to reinforce the façade of the Hymmen building, as it is supporting the façade at 150 King Street West.

For now, King Street remains closed to vehicles between Young and Gaukel streets. Young is blocked off entirely between King and Duke Street.

City officials say demolition work is expected to resume late this week, and King reopen by the middle of next week.

The owner of the Mayfair and Hymmen properties says he plans to build a parkette on the site, which will remain there until more permanent development begins.
