An arrest warrant is out and a police search is underway near St. Agatha. They’re looking for a suspect accused of attacking two women with a hammer in Kitchener last night.
Police say the man they're looking for is Michael Fortune, 18, of Kitchener. Investigators believe they're closing in on his location, but they're still asking the public for any tips.
Fortune has been on the run for the past 24 hours, after allegedly attacking two women known to him with a hammer Monday night at a home on Talbot Street.
He is described as a black man, heavy build, about six-foot, three inches tall, 230 pounds, with black hair and brown hair.
He is believed to be wearing black pants, black shirt and black jacket and may not be wearing shoes.
The two victims were treated for face and head injuries that were serious but not life threatening. Police say the women knew Fortune, but won't go into detail.
“The privacy of the victims is paramount. We’re not able to get into the specifics of the relationship other than that they were known to each other” says media spokesperson Olaf Heinzel.
Fortune is wanted on several charges, including aggravated assault, assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, breach of probation and forcible confinement.
This afternoon, police received calls about a suspicious man seen in a wooded area near St. Agatha K-9 units were called in and officers set up a perimeter along country roads.
Fortune is considered armed and dangerous, they are warning residents not to approach him, but to call 9-1-1.
“He has a potential for violence and therefore for public safety it would be better if they don't approach him but they just contact police right away.” says Heinzel.
Meanwhile Talbot Street has returned to its usual quiet low key state. Neighbours say they're still a bit on edge from seeing so many police officers and flashing lights.
“Yeah well we've been here what 43 years? And nothing like this ever happened anything.” says Janet Curran.
Police say the suspect is still considered armed and dangerous and should not be directly approached
