A 31-year-old man was badly hurt in an attack that occurred just after the Canada Day festivities wrapped up in downtown Kitchener.

As partygoers left downtown Kitchener, they saw a stretch of King Street around Water Street blocked off by Waterloo Regional Police.

A significant amount of blood was visible on a sidewalk, along with clothing and shoes.  Police said the man was attacked with an edged weapon.

The man, a Kitchener resident, was initially taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, but police later said that he is expected to survive.

Although one man was seen being led into a police cruiser in handcuffs in the area, police said Thursday morning that a separate, unrelated incident was behind that arrest.

No arrests have been made in connection with the attack, which investigators believe was not random and may have stemmed from an interaction between the victim and one or more others at a nearby bar.

Police want to hear from any witnesses.
