City workers in Orillia got quite a surprise while cleaning up branches that had fallen from a tree during a storm late Friday night, when they discovered an unconscious man under the debris.

Provincial police say they responded to a call that a man was unconscious but breathing under downed tree branches (at the corner of Parkview Avenue and Jarvis Street).

The 51-year-old Orillia man was transported to a Toronto area trauma centre with critical injuries.

Police say officers searched the areas that were hit hardest by the storm, including Couchiching Park and Tudhope Park, looking for any other victims of the storm.

No other injuries were reported and no additional victims of the storm were located.

Police are asking the public to stay out of both parks due to the number of downed trees, and Couchiching Park has been closed until further notice in the interest of public safety.
