A man is dead after a collision between a Via Rail passenger train and a pickup truck near Thamesville.

It happened just before 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Zone Road 6 and Fairfield Line in Zone Township.

Chatham-Kent police say the driver, who was the only person inside the truck at the time of the collision, was taken to Newbury Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead in hospital.

Damage to the truck was extensive.

Via Rail spokeswoman Elizabeth Huart says the train was travelling from Windsor to Toronto, and that no one on board was injured. The train was able continue on to Toronto after being released by police.

Huart says OPP and CN Rail, which owns the tracks, are investigating the incident.
