A walk with the dog turned into a dramatic rescue in Bloomingdale after the dog fell through the ice, and the man trying to rescue the pet – fell through too.

Antonio Zacarias told CTV News he was walking his dog near the Grand River in the Snyder Flats and Sawmill Road area Friday morning, when he heard cries for help.

He says he found a man in his mid-twenties trapped in the waters of a deep pond, and then helped coach the man to safety as emergency crews we called.

Zacarias says by the time emergency crews arrived on scene, the man had made it to the shoreline on his own.

He was taken to Grand River Hospital as a precaution because he was fully submerged in the water, and is doing well.

The dog is also going to be fine and is safe.

Officials are reminding the public about ice safety, especially for young children and pets.

The Grand River Conservation Authority can impose a $95 fine on owners whose dogs are off leash at Snyders Flats, but it has to be witnessed by an officer.
