Kitchener’s prison for women was placed in lockdown on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for the Correctional Service of Canada says the lockdown at Grand Valley Institution for Women was enacted around 11:30 a.m.

“The search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff and inmates,” Charlene Byfield said.

“Normal operations will resume as soon as it is considered safe to do so.”

No visits will be allowed at the prison until the lockdown is lifted.

Grand Valley was in a lockdown for several days in October.
