A 23-year-old university student has died after being hit by a car in Uptown Waterloo.

Waterloo Regional police say the crash happened just before 6 p.m. at King Street South and Willis Way.

Sgt. Scott Richardson says the pedestrian was trying to cross King Street when she was struck by a motor vehicle heading southbound.

She was transported to Grand River Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

Police blocked off the intersection for several hours while they investigated. Richardson says they spoke with several witnesses to the collision.

Investigators have not yet released the victim’s name, but they say she is a 23-year-old university student whose family is from Europe.

Police say the male driver of the car was not injured.

Police say they do not anticipate laying any charges at this point and say speed and alcohol are not believed to have been factors in the crash.
