Hundreds of prom dresses have been donated to a charity called the Princess Project over the past few days.

The project gives girls who can’t afford the perfect outfit a chance to deck themselves out in a dress, shoes and jewellery, essentially making their prom a reality.

The girls got to pick from close to 300 dresses that were on display at the Kitchener Library Wednesday.

Organizers say that all teens who come seeking a dress are accepted. They are not looking for people to prove that they are low income, rather they want to make sure there are dresses for the girls from all family situations.

A group of volunteers takes the young women through the process of picking out their prom attire.

Teens were lined up out the door, excited to see what outfit they would come away with.

“Growing up I didn't have the opportunity to get everything sort of fancy,” said Maria Alviano.

“So being able to have the opportunity to go to prom and have a really nice dress is something that makes me really happy.”

It’s the sixth year that the Kitchener Princess Project has been taking place.

The dresses were donated by local retailers and donors.
