Kitchener Mayor Carl Zehr announced Tuesday morning that he will not be running for another term in office.

After 26 years of working on Kitchener City Council Carl Zehr has announced his intention to retire from elected office after this term. Zehr spent 17 years as mayor and nine as a city councillor.  During that same period of time Mayor Zehr also served 23 years as a Region of Waterloo Councillor.

“Over the past three decades our community has accomplished a great deal,” noted Zehr. “By working together, residents, businesses, community groups, municipal staff and councils have built a city that is truly the envy of many other municipalities. We have provided residents with the services they need today, while transforming our local economy into one which creates jobs for decades to come and positions us well to compete globally.  I am deeply honoured and grateful to have had the opportunity to play a leadership role in many of those accomplishments and believe strongly in the community we have built.”

“No one individual, including myself, can take credit for all of this amazing work. While we haven’t always gotten it right the first time, we have achieved our greatest successes when we’ve come together as a community to tackle the challenges of the day and pursue the opportunities of tomorrow,” said Zehr. “I am truly appreciative and thankful for all the support I have received since first being elected.”
