Manslaughter charges have been laid following the death of a 56-year-old Kitchener man.

Waterloo Regional Police say they were called to an apartment in a rooming house on Duke Street East near Cameron Street on Saturday due to a report of an assault.

“(They) had been in the apartment for some time prior to the incident,” police spokesperson Olaf Heinzel tells CTV News.

According to police, Babiker Moustafa was found inside and taken to hospital to be treated for facial injuries received when he was struck by a drinking glass.

Lowrans Yai, a 34-year-old Kitchener man, was arrested at the scene and initially charged with assault.

That charge was upgraded to manslaughter after Moustafa died Wednesday afternoon in a Toronto hospital.

An autopsy is scheduled to take place Friday to confirm the cause of death.

Police say Yai and Moustafa are known to each other.

Yai made a brief court appearance Thursday morning.

He will likely be represented by lawyer Nicholas Wansbutter, who says Yai will likely seek bail.

“It sounds like there’s going to be a big question over how Mr. Moustafa died,” Wansbutter says.

“I’m going to want the autopsy reports and the medical reports before I proceed into a bail hearing.”

Yai’s next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday.
