The University of Waterloo’s Institute of Quantum Computing got a big boost from the federal government Thursday.

Ed Holder, the federal minister of state for science and technology, was on hand to reaffirm $15 million in previously announced funding for the institute.

“This funding will help the Institute for Quantum Computing to continue attracting world-leading research talent and to increasingly translate new knowledge into innovative quantum-based technologies for the benefit of Canadians,” Holder said in a press release.

Quantum computing is a rapidly growing industry. Those who understand it say work done at IQC will have a significant amount on the day-to-day lives of the average Canadian before long.

“IQC research doesn’t end in the library,” IQC executive director Raymond Laflamme said in the release.

“IQC is doing research that will make a difference in the way Canadians live their lives.”

The funding will be spread over three years.
