Police say an overnight house party got so out of control Saturday night, 50 officers had to break it up.

On Saturday, the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University held their annual homecoming weekend festivities.

“There was 700 people invited on Facebook,” said Amy Smith, a second year Laurier student.

Thousands celebrated during the day, and officers remarked on hopes for a calm, responsible weekend.

“We hope when somebody is thinking of doing something stupid, doing something unsafe, that they might turn around, see a police officer in the close vicinity and it might prevent them from doing that,” said Waterloo Regional Police officer, Ben Coles.

Police say they had a steady stream of tickets handed out for underage drinking and for having open liquor.

More than a thousand party goers crowded the area of State Street and Fir Street police say, and it took approximately one hour to disperse the crowd.

“They had to come or it would have been bad cause it was getting very out of hand,” said Cassandra Gates, a second year Laurier student.

Police say there was also an incident of students throwing beer bottles at officers on Ezra Avenue.

Damage was caused to several vehicles from the exploding bottles.

“It’s not good for Laurier or the street,” said Gates.

“I’m honestly kind of ashamed,” said Jake Laroche.

A 19-year-old man from Guelph has been charged with assaulting an officer, and police say further actions may still be taken against others who were causing mischief.

“I don’t understand what last night was at all, it was not our school,” said Laroche.
