One person has been arrested in connection with an alleged threat that prompted a hold-and-secure situation at a high school in Kitchener’s south end.

The hold-and-secure – a situation less severe than a lockdown, in which the building’s doors are locked and nobody is allowed into or out of the building – began late Friday morning at Huron Heights Secondary School.

There was no ongoing incident at the school, Waterloo Regional Police said, but police were investigating “a complaint about a possible threat.”

Students inside the school said they were nervous and left wondering exactly what was going on.

“It was basically business as usual, but we weren’t really allowed to leave our classrooms,” said Shak Simmons, a Grade 11 student.

Around 12:45 p.m., the hold-and-secure was lifted and people were again allowed to enter and exit the school.

A spokesperson for the Waterloo Region District School Board said a threat was made against the school, and school officials learned of it via social media.

“The police have found the people that were involved,” superintendent Scott Lomax said.

Friday evening, word came down that an adult man had been arrested in connection with the incident.

He faces two charges of uttering threats and one charge of mischief, police said.
