The Fountain Street bridge is coming down, so they’ll close the highway.

At 10 p.m. Saturday, Highway 401 will be closed in both directions between Highway 8 and Hespeler Road.

Once that happens, work will begin to demolish the bridge over Fountain Street.

“It’s a very co-ordinated, engineered demolition,” Ministry of Transportation spokesperson Liane Fisher told CTV News.

The highway is expected to reopen by 9 a.m. Sunday – as is Highway 8 between Sportsworld Drive and the 401, which will also close Saturday night.

For impacted drivers, the suggested detour is along Hespeler, Maple Grove Road, Sportsworld Drive and King Street.

Fountain Street itself has been closed around the bridge for more than a week, and will remain inaccessible until fall.

The $16.9-million project will see the highway widened to 10 lanes between Kitchener and Cambridge by the time it wraps up.
