Lynn MacLean received an 8-year jail sentence after pleading guilty to manslaughter on Thursday.

He was arrested in January after he stabbed his brother Ron Domonsky in the apartment they shared on Hilltop Drive in Cambridge.

Both brothers were intoxicated on the night of January 25th. MacLean had started drinking around 1 p.m. His brother, also intoxicated, returned home a few hours later.

The brothers argued for several hours.

A neighbour told CTV that “voices got angry… aggressive after awhile. There was quite a bit of shouting and quite a bit of fighting.”

Around 10 p.m. that night, Domonsky allegedly called MacLean a loser and an alcoholic.

MacLean then grabbed a butcher knife and stabbed his brother multiple times in the stomach.

MacLean’s lawyer Craig Parry says he did it “in order to scare his half-brother.”

The court heard how MacLean called his ex-wife before calling police. Then he left the apartment to continue drinking at a nearby bar where he was later arrested.

Domonsky was taken to hospital but later died from his injuries.

The court also heard that “upon being told his brother had died MacLean initially expressed surprise that his wounds were fatal and thereafter showed extreme remorse.”

MacLean told the judge that “not a day goes by that I don’t think about what I did.” He then started crying and mouthed the words “I’m sorry” to his ex-wife.

During the trial the court heard victim impact statements from MacLean’s other brother and his mother.

MacLean’s ex-wife said: “I have had to speak to your mom, brothers and our children about your actions. How do we deal with losing two people we love? One to death, one to prison?”

Both the crown and the defense asked for an 8-year prison term which the judge accepted.
