Police have laid a charge of arson in connection with a house fire that occurred hours after police searched a Fergus home for child pornography.

Around noon on Jan. 25, police executed a search warrant at the home, located on Union Street in Fergus.

Investigators believed somebody in the home was making images of child sexual abuse available online.

Seventy-one-year-old Paul Curry was arrested at the scene on child pornography charges.

A few hours later, police were called back to the home for a report of a fire.

The fire was extinguished by firefighters.

A 65-year-old woman, identified by neighbours as Curry’s wife Mary Jane, was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Wellington County OPP announced Thursday that Mary Jane Curry has been charged with arson.
