The battle against frozen pipes cost the City of Guelph $640,000 this winter.

It was an unexpected expense, and city officials hope the province will help cover some of its cost.

“This winter’s really been out of the ordinary for us,” Peter Busatto, the city’s general manager of water services, told CTV News.

Guelph plans to make an application under the Ontario Disaster Relief Fund.

Some residents were without water for as long as eight weeks, while others were told to leave a tap running constantly – an expense the city is picking up the tab for, which has them in turn hoping for provincial help.

The City of Owen Sound made a similar request for about $1 million several weeks ago, but was turned down.
