Melting snow and a forecast for significant rainfall have the Grand River Conservation Authority on alert for potential ice jams and flooding.

Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning Tuesday afternoon for Waterloo Region and Southern Wellington County. Total rainfall amounts of up to 30 mm could fall by Wednesday morning.

Localized flooding is possible in low-lying areas.

As well, ice jams pose a significant risk – particularly in northern parts of the Grand watershed.

The GRCA issued a statement Monday saying that a “significantly quantity of ice” had moved into Belwood Lake, prompting officials to close the 10th Line bridge.

Ice jams are possible above Belwood, in Grand Valley and in West Montrose, the agency said.

The southern portion of the river – downstream of Brantford, particularly near Cayuga – is also being monitored for potential ice jams, although the GRCA does not believe that the risk there is as high as it is to the north.

Ice jams could also occur in the Nith River, particularly in New Hamburg, Plattsville, Ayr and Wolverton.

The low-level bridge near St. Jacobs was also closed due to high water levels.
