Residents of a Cambridge neighbourhood were evacuated from their homes Thursday morning due to a gas leak.

Firefighters and police responded to the area of Lowther and Moore streets, in the west end of the Preston neighbourhood, shortly before 9 a.m.

Waterloo Regional Police say an excavator digging a trench cut into the gas line.

Only homes within one block of the break were evacuated, but those living in a wider area were advised to keep their doors and windows shut.

Students at nearby Grand View Public School were kept inside during their morning recess.

The leak was brought under control around 9:30 a.m., with no injuries reported.
