If you live in Waterloo or Cambridge, the week of March 6 to March 10 will be the first week when putting garbage out at the curb won’t lead to it being taken away.

If you live in Kitchener or any of Waterloo Region’s townships, the same thing will happen the following week.

Those two weeks are when the region will start its new, biweekly garbage pickup program.

Recycling and green bin waste will still be picked up on a weekly basis. Part of the rationale for moving from weekly to biweekly pickup was to try and get more waste disposed of through those streams, rather than as garbage.

The new contract also means some homes will see their pickup for all types of waste switch to a different day of the week.

Regional officials say most homes in the townships will have their pickup days change, along with “a few thousand homes in Kitchener and a few homes on the borders of Kitchener and Waterloo.”

More information, including a tool to look up exact dates by address, is available on the region’s website.

In addition to the scheduling changes, the region is bringing in a limit of four garbage bags or cans per pickup.
