Snow, freezing rain and ice pellets fell across southern Ontario on Tuesday, making a mess of the afternoon commute.

Between noon and 4 p.m., Waterloo Regional Police responded to 20 collisions.

“If you don’t have to drive at all, try and put it off until a later time,” police spokesperson Olaf Heinzel said in the late afternoon.

“If you do have to drive, leave yourself plenty of time to get to your destination.”

Many collisions were also reported outside the region, including one which shut part of Highway 7/8 between New Hamburg and Shakespeare until 5:30 p.m.

As of 6:45 p.m., a freezing drizzle advisory was in effect for an area of southern Ontario stretching from Sarnia to Hamilton, through Toronto and northeast to Barrie and Kingston.

Included in that area were Waterloo-Wellington, Huron-Perth, Grey-Bruce and Oxford-Brant.

Environment Canada called for those regions to receive freezing drizzle or light freezing rain through the evening, occasionally mixed with light snow or ice pellet precipitation.
