Ontario says it’s the first province in Canada to offer the shingles vaccine to seniors at no cost.

The move was first announced in this spring’s budget, and took effect Thursday. It allows people between the ages of 65 and 70 to receive the vaccine.

Shingles can cause nerve pain, loss of vision, skin rashes and other complications.

Anyone interested in receiving the vaccinations is being directed to their primary care doctor or nurse practitioner.

The province is budgeting $68 million over three years for the vaccinations.
