A man who pled guilty to stealing a van in Blyth, before crashing it into a truck in Wingham has been sentenced.

Joshua Fryer will spend four years in jail.

Wingham’s main street was littered with debris after the van Fryer was driving hit a pregnant woman’s truck on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2014.  Marsha Benninger and her three-year-old daughter were in the truck. Both drivers had to be extricated from their vehicles, both with serious injuries. Benninger’s unborn son died due to the injuries she incurred.

During the trial, court heard that investigator’s estimate that the van was travelling around 170 kilometres per hour, and that Fryer never touched the brakes before the impact.

Along with four years in jail, a ten-year driving ban was also imposed by the judge.
