The Fountain Street bridge has officially come down after part of Highway 401 was closed so workers could demolish the familiar sight Saturday night.

Officials say the bridge was old and in need of replacing.

Demolition of the bridge is part of a plan to widen the highway to 10 lanes between Kitchener and Cambridge.

The Ministry of Transportation says the steel and concrete will be separated and recycled.

The overnight teardown had 60 workers, 10 excavators, three loaders, three rock trucks and 15 to 20 pick-up trucks working on the job.

1600 tons of material was removed according to the ministry.

This is all a part of a 16.9 million dollar project, which includes work on Fountain Street, Speedsville Road, and the ramp connecting Highway 8 to Highway 401.

Waterloo Region is pitching in $300,000 to build sidewalks and bike lanes on each side of the new Fountain Street bridge.
