The Cambridge teacher accused of having sex with a 17-year-old student is now out of a job.

The Waterloo Catholic District School Board told CTV News Friday that trustees voted earlier this week to terminate the employment of Jacqueline Lavigne.

“She no longer works for the Waterloo Catholic District School Board,” said spokesperson John Shewchuk.

Lavigne was convicted of sexual exploitation last month in connection with a sexual encounter between her and a then-17-year-old student.

When the incident occurred in 2012, the teen was attending Monsignor Doyle Catholic Secondary School, where Lavigne worked as a teacher and basketball coach.

She was suspended by the school board when the allegations came to light.

That suspension was with pay until the judge rendered his verdict in March.

“A person is innocent until proven guilty, so she was placed on administrative leave (initially),” Shewchuk said.

“When the trial happened and she was convicted, her suspension turned to a suspension without pay.”

Lavigne remains free on bail, with sentencing set for June.

She is legally able to appeal the school board’s dismissal, but representatives of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association say they’re still determining whether they would support her in an appeal bid.
