Effective immediately, anyone caught feeding wildlife in Kitchener could wind up with a hefty fine.

A new bylaw banning the feeding of wild animals anywhere in the city was approved by city councillors Monday night.

It came about as a result of concerns about wild animals moving into the city in greater numbers than in the past.

The maximum fine for anyone caught doing so is $5,000.

The bylaw does make an exception for bird feed, and another for feral cats.

Like all bylaws, it will be enforced on a complaint basis.
