Federal funding was announced Tuesday for nearly $700 million worth of transit projects in Ontario – including half a dozen initiatives related to Grand River Transit.

Waterloo will receive about $22.8 million for the projects, with $12 million of that total going to vehicle replacements.

Also announced was $3.5 million for the development of unnamed iXpress stations, $2.5 million for the a transit plaza at the University of Waterloo, $2 million to build a transit station on Block Line Road, $2 million more for the new transit terminal at Fairview Park Mall, and $775,000 for a facility on Northfield Drive.

A further $28 million is being put toward two Metrolinx projects, while the remainder of the funding was allocated to transit projects in Toronto, Ottawa, Sudbury and Barrie.

“These investments will provide Ontarians with improved public transit systems that will get them to work on time, and back home quickly and safely,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a press release.

The federal government is still accepting applications for other projects under its Public Transit Infrastructure Fund, and has budgeted to spend a further $800,000 in Ontario through the fund.
