An unattended candle is being blamed for a fire in Milverton.

It started in the bathroom of a home on Perth County Road 131 just before 5:30 a.m. Monday.

Someone who lives in the home discovered the fire and woke up the rest of the family.

The two adults and five children escaped unharmed.

They tried unsuccessfully to use a fire extinguisher to keep the flames from spreading.

Firefighters were eventually able to contain the blaze.

Damage to the home is estimated at $200,000.

Officials say the homeowner will also be fined $350 because there were no working smoke alarms.
