A home near St. Thomas has been reduced to rubble after a fire broke out early on Sunday morning.
Fire crews were called to the home on Fingal, just west of John Wise Line, around 3:30 a.m.
Dave Berger told CTV News he heard a smoke detector and acted quickly to get three other family members out safely.
“I woke up about 3:30 in the morning, seen flames rolling over in my dining room area where the wood stove was,” says Berger.
Berger’s son Clayton and his girlfriend had to exit out of a second-storey window and jump from a low roof, which was about five feet high.
The family’s dog also made it out safely, though not their cat. All of their belongings and basic needs are destroyed.
“There was no turning back, no car keys, no socks, no shoes, no shirt,” says Berger.
While the fire started in the area of a woodstove, the cause has not yet been determined.
