It’s going to be downright frigid this weekend with wind chill values expected to dip below -30. Officials are warning people to prepare for the extreme cold snap by bundling up or staying inside.

The risk of frostbite is great when weather like is expected this weekend.  Exposed skin can become frostbitten in only a few minutes and prolonged exposure can result in hypothermia.

“Even in just a few minutes you can get a lot of damage and potentially get serious or life threatening injuries,” says Dr. Indy Salujafrom Grand River Hospital.

Region of Waterloo Public Health is advising people to check weather conditions before heading outdoors.

They also say you should limit your time spent in the elements, covering exposed skin by dressing in layers. Wind-resistant and waterproof outer layers are best. You should also wear waterproof boots, a hat and mittens instead of gloves.

If you are going to be outside, be sure to keep yourself moving to keep warm and shelter yourself from the wind.

For people sleeping on the street, this type of weather can be deadly. An extreme weather protocol is in place across the region meaning everyone is welcome in shelters even if they have been banned or restricted from a certain location.

Bed space at some of the shelters is filling up fast, but motels will be used if necessary.

“We will work with you to figure out and problem solve where you can stay warm for the night,” says Ron Flaming from the House of Friendship.

It is recommended that people check on vulnerable family members and neighbours this weekend to make sure they are getting through the cold snap safely.
