Local races not short on excitement

At least four of Waterloo Region’s municipalities will end the day with new mayors ready to lead them, while incumbents elsewhere in our coverage area face significant battles of their own.

In Kitchener, Mayor Carl Zehr is retiring after being at the city’s helm since 1997.

Seeking to replace him are incumbent councillors Berry Vrbanovic and Dan Glenn-Graham, as well as political newcomers Peter Martin and Slavko Miladinovic – and James Rhodes, who has asked voters not to select him.

All candidates in the race to replace Brenda Halloran in Waterloo’s top job are new to municipal politics, including former tech sector executive Dave Jaworsky, former weatherperson Dave MacDonald, entrepreneur Rami Said and lawyer Erika Traub.

Ken Seiling has been chair of Waterloo Region since 1985, but he faces six competitors seeking his position – the most prominent of which is business owner Jay Aissa.

The two front-runners in Guelph are widely presumed to be incumbent Mayor Karen Farbridge and Coun. Cam Guthrie, who have been at the forefront of a bitter campaign.

Elsewhere in our coverage area, Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig, Brantford Mayor Chris Friel and Stratford Mayor Dan Mathieson seek to retain their seats against an assortment of challengers.
