Local Muslims gathered in Kitchener on Monday for the Waterloo-Wellington County Eid Festival.

Eid al-Fitr is a celebration to mark the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting and reflection.

“Increased piety, charity and family and self-sacrifice is the theme of the month” says Faisal Raja, a volunteer at the festival.

During Ramadan Muslims cannot eat or drink from dawn to dusk.

“Putting yourself in the situation of those that are less fortunate, as well as abstaining from things such as food primarily, and water during the day to teach you self-control and put you in the position of those people that don’t normally have it” Raja explains.

Eid is traditionally a three day ceremony, where family and friends gather to celebrate.

“It’s a nice time to wish everyone to have a lovely time after a long month of fasting” said Wisam Osman, who attended the festival with her family.
