A car crash early Tuesday morning ripped up railway lights and closed down traffic after an alleged drunk driver made a mess on Columbia Street in Waterloo.

Police say a 19-year-old man was driving the car that collided with a taxi, left the scene, struck four railway lights, bounced off several medians, took out a light pole then finally came to a rest on the centre median.

The driver walked away with only minor injuries.

The exact speed of the car isn’t known but police say that it was going well over the 60 km/h speed limit.

Columbia was closed in both directions at the intersection of Hagey Boulevard for several hours for police to conduct their investigation and for crews to clean up. It reopened before noon.

During the crash, the car severed several pieces of LRT infrastructure that had recently been installed.

As of Tuesday afternoon, there was no timetable for repairing the infrastructure. Damage costs were still being calculated by the region and GrandLinq.

“When you combine all the things from Waterloo Taxi to the street light to the railway signs, there’s gonna be quite a bill,” said Acting Sgt. Steve Sadler of Waterloo Regional Police.
