A 19-year-old man whose car hit a tree, killing his passenger, was impaired at the time, police say.

The 19-year-old was charged Thursday in connection with Tuesday morning’s crash on Highway 53 near Cathcart, west of Brantford.

According to Brant County OPP, the car was eastbound on the highway when it lost control and struck a tree.

The passenger, who was pronounced dead at the scene, has not been identified publicly.

Police said Thursday that the driver, a Norfolk County resident, faces two charges relating to impaired driving causing death.
