A decades-old cold case has been solved. A Kitchener man who went missing 30 years ago has been found safe in St. Catharines.

Edgar Latulip was last seen on Sept. 2, 1986 at the old Voyager bus station in Kitchener. He was 21 years old.

At the time of his disappearance, the missing person’s report suggested that he may have had mental health problems and was possibly on medication.

Officials believe that Latulip boarded a bus and traveled to the Niagara region.

From there, no one is exactly sure what happened. Police say it’s likely he suffered trauma to the head causing him to lose his memory. “What occurred was a head injury shortly after arriving in St. Catharines a number of years ago. Effectively he forgot who he was,” said Det. Const Duane Gingerich from Waterloo Regional Police.

In January part of  his memory came back. Edgar Latulip told a social worker that he remembered his name.

Niagara Police were contacted and through a DNA match Latulip’s identity was confirmed.

According to Gingerich it’s a unique case with a rare outcome.  He said: "It's the only case that I know of where we've ever been able to find someone who's been missing for this period of time."

Latulip has yet to be reunited with his family. Police say that they are very happy and planning on getting together with him in the near future.
