Five residents of a Waterloo retirement home are displaced following a fire inside the building.

Three first stations responded to The Court at Laurelwood around 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

As crews made their way to the fire – on the third floor of the building – they had to make their way through heavy amounts of smoke in the hallways.

While the fire was quickly extinguished before it could spread past the unit where it began, smoke and water damage permeated throughout the building.

Fire officials estimate the damage between $1.2 million and $1.5 million.

No injuries were reported, and residents of affected units are either staying with family or being moved to other units within the building.

The Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating.
