Two people remain displaced following a fire in a Waterloo apartment building.

Fire crews from three stations were called to 166 Wissler Road, near Northfield Drive and Bridge Street, shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Upon arrival, they found a third-storey unit engulfed in flames and smoke billowing from the building.

It’s believed the fire began in the unit’s bedroom before spreading into the rest of the apartment.

Firefighters were able to contain the flames to the one apartment, but smoke damage affected some of the building’s hallways while other units were damaged by water.

A Grand River Transit bus was brought in to house a number of residents who were temporarily evacuated due to the fire.

Once the flames were extinguished, after more than an hour of firefighting efforts, most of the residents were able to return home.

“We’ve done some air quality monitoring and everything has checked out,” assistant deputy fire chief Ryan Schubert said.

Only two residents – neither of whom were home when the flames broke out – were displaced overnight.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Damage is estimated at $100,000.
